What Type of Foods Helps You Sleep?
Sleep disorders have become so common that there's a huge variety of items available to help you sleep better each night. Everything from new medications to mechanical devices and natural supplements. What many people don't know is that there are plenty of foods that can also help you sleep. The other nice thing about this is that because this is just food then you're not going to have to worry about any weird side-effects that medication might have.
The most common type of food that can help you sleep are the different types of herbal teas. Teas that contain herbs such as peppermint, chamomile or valerian root are (and have been)used by people all over the world for hundreds of years to help you relax and ideally fall asleep naturally. Because these are naturally occuring herbs this means you can use them without fear of addiction. Valerian root is also great for treating anxiety.
Make sure that the tea you choose does not contain any caffeine because of its stimulant effect - the last thing you need when you're trying to sleep is to be stimulated to even a tiny degree. Having an alert mind definitely won't help you sleep.
You can also use certain herbs as seasoning on your food that also help to promote a relaxed state in your body. For example sage, jasmine and hops have the same effect when they're eaten as part of a meal as they have when taken as a supplement. The only downside is that it would probably take a very large helping of any of these herbs to make you sleep when used as seasoning. So much so that you probably wouldn't be able to eat the meal because of the strong taste.
Thre are also certain foods which are high in amino acids which help promote sleep so these are ideal foods to be eaten as a snack before bedtime. These foods are warm milk, natural cheeses and cottage cheese, lentils, and similar seeds are also high in amino acids and can help you sleep more soundly.
Oatmeal has an old reputation as being one of the healthiest foods you can eat for a lot of reasons. Again most people don't know that oatmeal can actually help promote sleep. Some people prefer their oatmeal as a cereal cooked with milk while others prefer their oatmeal as a cookie. It doesn't matter how the oatmeal is cooked, it will still have the same effect on the body to help the person get to sleep faster each night.
No you know which foods you need to eat to help you sleep - make sure and enjoy them!
