Strategies For Deep Sleep When You Have Insomnia
When you suffer from insomnia the only thing that you can focus on and desire is to sleep. Every passing night that you don't sleep properly just makes matters worse. Going long enough without sleep can lead to a psychotic episode because the mind and body need a certain amount of sleep to function properly and depriving your body of this much needed sleep is pretty much the same as torture.
Insomnia sufferers know just how much they miss sleep and are always looking for ways to improve the quality or length of their sleep. Finding a strategy for dealing with insomnia will depend on the actual cause of the insomnia the first place and just how severe the problem is. If you don't get a handle on the cause of your insomnia then treating it is going to be an uphill battle. You'll just waste a lot of time and money trying random treatments and hoping that one of them will work.
One of the most common causes for insomnia is that you've suddenly started experiencing a whole new level of stress in your life. This could be because of a negative event in your life such as divorce, loss of your job or the loss of a loved friend or family member. Sometimes the cause of your stress might be something that many people would see as positive thing such as a foreign vacation, job promotion or moving home (moving home is in the top 5 biggest causes of stress by the way).
An effective strategy for obtaining deep sleep in these cases will have to involve a way to reduce the amount of stress that the person is feeling right before they go to bed and attempt to go to sleep. There's a ton of relaxation techniques that you can start using before you sleep each night.
The first thing to look at is what pattern or habits you have before you go to bed.
Do you watch tv before going to bed or while you're in bed?
TV stimulates the mind and can cause your imagination to run wild which is going to stop you from sleeping properly that night.
Do you exercise in the late evening before sleeping?
This can pump your body full of adrenalin which is designed to help you run faster and further away from danger. This really won't help you sleep.
Do you take any medication before going to bed?
Check with your doctor to make sure that none of your meds have the side-effect of causing insomnia. You'd be surprised at how many medicines can cause insomnia - slimming/diet tablets being some of the worst offenders.
These are just a few examples but you really do need to look at your habits before bed and try to pinpoint any habits you have that might be stopping you from sleeping properly.
If you can't identify the cause of your insomnia from your habits then your next step is to develop an overall sleep strategy or plan for getting asleep.
Take a warm relaxing essential oil bath an hour or so before bed. Get one of your favourite books to read a few pages of or put on a favourite piece of music that relaxes you. Dim the lights in your bedroom or turn them off completely and just use a bedside lamp instead. Get comfortable in your bed - do whatever you need to do to get comfortable first. Relax your body as much as you can - one trick is to relax each limb individually by just focusing on relaxing that limb on it's own. Watch your breathing and allow it to slow down. A slower breathing rate will lower your heart rate and will bring on a very sound sleep.
The above are just ideas on how you can go about developing a strategy for sleeping better - the actual steps in your own strategy need to be decided by you.
