How Stress Can Induce Insomnia
Even though somebody might be suffering from insomnia they may not realize that stress they're experiencing each day could actually be causing their inability to sleep. Stress can cause a wide variety of problems in the human body but one of the first indicators of the fact that you're stressed is that you'll have difficulty sleeping which could then, quite easily, become insomnia. If stress is causing your insomnia then the key is to remove the stress from your relief - as opposed to just taking medication.
When tracking down the number one cause of short term insomnia stress comes out at the top of the league each time. Increased stress can cause sleep disorders in people of all ages - from child right up to senior citizens. Most people associate stress with a negative event such as a bereavement or when a person loses their job. Oddly enough people can become just as stressed by positive events such as a job promotion or even just a vacation. You'll all experience stress at some stage in your life - the key is handling it properly so that it doesn't become a major issue for you.
So how do you manage your stress?
Firstly you need to realize that you cannot control some situations in life. Most of you will tend to feel extremely stressed when something happens in your life that leaves you feeling powerless. Sometimes you just need to let go of these stressful events that you don't have control over.
Here's a favourite quote:
"God, grant me the Serenity to accept the thingsI cannot change Courage to change the things I can and the Wisdom to know the difference."
If you're an atheist this can still apply - a belief in a divine power isn't required to accept this simple concept.
Secondly you need to identify the things that cause stress in your life. For example if you have a person in your life (partner, friend or co-worker for example) that causes you stress then perhaps it would be a good idea to limit contact with this person. You'll be amazed at how limited contact with negative people can literally make you feel "lighter".
Relaxation techniques are another great way of dealing with stress. Something as simple as taking a relaxing bath before you go to bed can be enough to promote healthy sleep. Getting some exercise in the early evening before bed can also help destress you - exercise promotes the release of endorphins (happy chemicals) in the body and these are great for dealing with stress.
My favourite way of dealing with stress is exercise - a really hard Jiu Jitsu workout or session at the gym can really lift my mood and helps me get rid of all the "nervous" energy that stress gives you. Oh and watching funny movies also seems to work really well - the bigger the laughs I get the less stressed I feel! Laughter truly is good for the soul.
